How to recognize the signs of an impending stroke

Recognizing Stroke Symptoms: Why Every Second Counts

Time is critical in treating a stroke. Early recognition of symptoms can save lives and reduce the risk of long-term disability.

The CDC reports that every 40 seconds, someone in the U.S. has a stroke, and every 3 minutes, a person dies from it. Strokes occur when blood flow to the brain is interrupted, either by a blockage (ischemic stroke) or a ruptured blood vessel (hemorrhagic stroke). Without oxygen, brain cells begin to die within minutes, making timely treatment essential.

Act FAST to Spot a Stroke
The Mayo Clinic advises using the FAST method to identify common stroke symptoms:

F – Face: Is one side of the face drooping or numb? Ask for a smile to check.
A – Arms: Is one arm weak or numb? Ask the person to lift both arms—does one drift downward?
S – Speech: Is speech slurred or hard to understand? Have them repeat a simple phrase like “The sky is blue.”
T – Time to call 911: If any of these signs are present, call emergency services immediately.
Other Warning Signs
Additional symptoms to watch for include:

Sudden confusion or trouble speaking.
Vision problems, such as blurred or double vision.
Severe headache, especially if paired with other symptoms.

Be empowered: Understanding what to do in an emergency reduces panic and ensures swift action, potentially saving a life.
